2021 Special Release Shiraz Pinot Noir
The Shiraz was sourced from and old vine, single block planted on volcanic red soils. The Pinot Noir was sourced from our 4 & 8 Acres block located here at the winery, which was planted in late 1960’s. The growing season for the 2021 vintage was one of the wettest in a decade, with over 1,000mm of rainfall received in the 12 months prior to harvest. A cool summer gave us even, stress-free ripening; all of the fruit had wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity. This blend of Shiraz (90%) and Pinot Noir (10%) is a modern interpretation of the great ‘Hunter River Burgundy’ styles made famous in the mid 1900s. Both varietals were vinified and matured separately before being blended in June, and then bottled in September.
Attractive, vibrant colour and a pretty aroma that jumps out of the glass. The palate is bright and approachable, with mouth filling fruit, soft tannins and bright acidity.
Alcohol – 13.5%

"I love this! A hark to the past as a harbinger of the present. A classic 'Hunter River Burgundy' blend (90/10% shiraz/pinot) dating back to the greats of the 1950s and '60s. But in these hands, appropriated to the sassy, pulpy and limpid style that makes for delicious contemporary drinking. Best, without forfeiting regional DNA. Hunter varnish, bing cherry, persimmon, Seville orange and clove. Expanding sweetness through the middle. An effortless finish of silken tannin and juicy acidity. Lovely drinking." (Oct 2021)

"It’s 90% shiraz and 10% pinot noir and all older vines and a very serious expression of Hunter. The juices were blended to get here. It’s a beauty, it’s Beaujolais-like and fresh, supple and vibrant feeling, all kirsch and red cherry led and dusted with a light sprinkle of sweet spice. It’s a refreshing red, shows some crisp edges and a flighty lick of fine, silty tannins, goes long and finishes cool and delicious. A ripper of a drink here, a touch fancy and it ends up that this is a mid-week guzzler of high pedigree and interest. I drank most of my bottle from tumblers, with gusto. Would get stuck into heaps of this." (Oct 2021)

“This smooth 90% Shiraz-10% Pinot Noir blend is of a Hunter Valley classic style made famous in the 1920s by legendary Mount Pleasant winemaker Maurice O’Shea, who called them Henry Pinot-Hermitage in honour of his friend French-born chef Henry Renault of Sydney’s l’Hermitage Restaurant. After a period when the style was dropped, Mount Pleasant’s then chief winemaker Phil Ryan revived it in 1997 and Tyrrell’s has followed suit with this 13.5% alcohol, bright crimson, rose petal-scented charmer. The front palate has elegant raspberry flavour, the middle Satsum plum, blueberry, spice and savoury oak and the finish dusty tannins. Great with roast duck and cellar 10 years.” (Oct 2021)
