This wine comes from our Johnno’s vineyard, which is situated just below the winery. Planted in 1908, it sits alongside Mary Anne’s Creek, which runs all the way down to our iconic Short Flat vineyard, and consequently features sandy soil. The fruit for our Johnno’s Semillon is hand-picked and sorted before immediately being basket pressed. The juice is then cold settled for two days before being racked to another stainless-steel tank to begin fermentation with a small amount of solids.
A modern day interpretation of the Hunter Semillons of yesteryear, the result is a more textural style of Semillon than we usually make. The colour is pale, but vivid green. The nose is a complex combination of citrus and a wet stone mineral edge. The palate is incredibly intense in its citrus fruit profile and strong acid, however, the mid palate texture from the basket pressing and solids ferment adds another dimension. Like Vat 1, this has a depth of flavour and length that is only seen in great years. One of the best Johnno’s that we have produced, and built for the long haul.
