2018 Estate Grown Shiraz

Our Estate Grown Shiraz from the outstanding 2018 vintage comes from specific vineyard blocks – Baulkham planted in 1962, Short Flat planted in 1968, and Weinkeller planted in 1970 – that were selected because they are inherently different to most of our other Shiraz sites that typically produce a finer Hunter Valley Shiraz style. Consequently, the 2018 Estate Grown Shiraz is bigger in style, with more tannin and a fuller, darker fruit profile.

It is a modern Australian Shiraz, driven by freshness, fruit and savoury spice. Dried-spice aromatics lead into a palate brimming with blackberry fruit and enticing notes of chocolate and liquorice. Some 14 months in French oak puncheons has smoothed out the wine’s edges. This is a fresh, punchy and completely delicious example of Hunter Valley Shiraz that is drinking well now but will also reward time in the cellar.

Alc.: 13.0%
Cellaring potential: 2020–30

90 Points | Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Deep red/purple colour, with a dried herb and dry spice bouquet, the palate zesty and crisp in acidity. Hints of liqueur cherries. Mild tannin grip, fresh acidity, dark fruits, medium-long finish

94+ Points | Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Heaps of boysenberry, violet, some biscuit spice, slight tarry earthy lilt. Medium-bodied, juicy berry fruit pie, liquorice, pitch-perfect acidity, slight grain to the sure-footed tannin, and a nice long finish. Should age nicely. So classic, and shows the wonderful vintage to fine effect.
