The grapes were sourced from a single vineyard in Gundagai, a high altitude, warm inland region in southern New South Wales that is perfectly suited to premium Shiraz. The fruit was picked in the cool of the night and transported to our Hunter Valley winery to be processed on the same day. The fruit was destemmed, but not crushed, with as many whole berries as possible going into the stainless steel fermenter. Fermenting with whole berries enhances the brightness and fruit purity, and reduces any overt tannin, which is perfect for this modern style of Shiraz. After fermentation, maturation took place in older French oak for 12 months.
Beside Broke Road Gundagai Shiraz is a great example of modern Australian Shiraz. Vivid, bright purple in colour, with an intoxicating aromatic profile of red and blue fruits and plenty of spice. The palate is medium bodied, with an abundance of soft, vibrant, mouth filling fruit. Soft tannins sit in the background with the acidity providing the backbone of the wine as well as its length.
