Estate Grown Shiraz is a blend from our Short Flat, Weinkeller and NVC Vineyards. These dry grown blocks were planted in 1968, 1970 and 1996.
The 2022 vintage, in many ways, was a mirror of 2021. With above average rainfall in the winter months, the vines were set up perfectly for the growing season. Cooler temperatures over the summer period meant that there was no rush to begin harvest and we began about seven to 10 days later than normal. All of the fruit was in remarkable condition with intense fruit flavours coupled with high natural acidity.
The estate vineyards offered excellent quality crops in the cooler 2022 vintage, where the fruit had a longer than normal hang time, resulting in wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity. Fermented in stainless steel open top vats, the fruit was destemmed but not crushed, ensuring as many whole berries as possible were in the fermenter. All blocks were fermented separately and matured in mostly newer large format French Oak (2,700L) and some barriques (225L) until November 2022, when they were blended to create the Estate Grown blend.
A modern, medium-bodied Australian Shiraz. The nose shows bright red fruits and savoury spice, which follows onto the palate. Primary, bright fruits balanced by soft, savoury tannins and a crunchy acidity adds to the wine’s complexity.

Alc 13.0%

James Suckling | 93 Points

Boysenberry, dill, sweet loam and clove, together with a hint of vanilla bean oak. If the Hunter shiraz is a cru Beaujolais doppelganger, this is a Morgon, the best of the crus. Lilac, sassafras, terracotta and iodine. Expansive, mid-weighted and lissome, with just the stickiness of the ferrous loamy soils, iterated as nicely wrought tannins serving to corral and compress. Midweighted, toothsome and delicious. Drink or hold. Screw cap. (Oct 2023)
