2018 Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet

Trophies and Medals

Our Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet is sourced from Shiraz grown on our Ashmans property and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the Pokolbin Hills Estate. The 2018 vintage in the Hunter Valley was simply spectacular for reds. Warm, dry conditions meant that cropping levels were reduced, helping to produce wines of great concentration and length of flavour. After fermentation in stainless-steel vats, both parcels were matured separately before blending. The blended wine, an amalgam of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, then finished its maturation in French-oak barriques. This is a modern style of Australian red that also respects the tradition of using varietal blending to create a more rounded wine. The Shiraz brings intense plum fruit sweetness and dark berry and chocolate characters, while the addition of a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon adds length and body.

Alcohol – 14%
Cellaring – 5-10 years

95 Points | James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

"There’s a subtle bend into more purple fruit on the nose here with a gentle, leafy edge, across red cherries, plums and fresh oak. The palate has such tautness and firm, dense yet fine tannin – barriques used here – with some very attractive red plums and mulberries and toasty young wood to close. A blend of 86% shiraz and 14% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold."

94 Points | Huon Hooke, The Real Review

"Deep, bright, youthful purple/red hue, the aroma sweetly blackberry-ish and showing a glimpse of cabernet even though it's only about 10% of the blend. The wine is elegantly styled, supple in tannins and displays beautiful poise. Hints of mulberry throughout, the fruit quite concentrated and essency in the mouth, with some alcohol warmth at the end. It's been aged in barriques but oak is nigh invisible. A bright, almost callow wine with a promising future."
