Stevens Semillon comes from Neil Stevens’ Glen Oak vineyard on Marrowbone Road, our southern-most Semillon vineyard, which features a combination of light, sandy loams and darker, heavier transitional soils. The oldest plantings on this vineyard are from 1911.
Vintage 2018 was a strong Semillon vintage in the Hunter Valley. Dry, warm conditions that were similar to 2003 meant cropping levels were smaller than average and produced wines of great concentration and length of flavour.
Stevens Semillon is almost always the first Semillon vineyard that we pick, and this year was no different, taking place on 17 and 18 January with a machine harvester in the early hours of the morning. The grapes were then pressed lightly, and the free run juice was used for fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine stayed in these tanks until bottling in June.
