2016 HVD Semillon

Trophies and Medals

Situated between two dry creek beds, the HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery) vineyard has ideal soils for Semillon; free draining sandy soils over coarse river sand. The vines are dry grown and were planted in 1908. The 2016 growing season was one that started with great promise with our wettest winter in nearly a decade. Perfect conditions for budburst and flowering were followed by an unsettled summer consisting of hot days and wild storms. Luckily, these weather patterns calmed down into one of the driest February’s on record. Handpicked in the early hours of the morning, the fruit was lightly crushed and pressed before a relatively cool fermentation. Then the wine spent minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.

Textbook HVD Semillon showing a lifted, generous floral aromatic unlike our other Semillons. The palate is full and soft, typical of the vineyard with a fine boned acidity giving the wine added element of interest.

Alcohol – 11%

93 Points | Ned Goodwin MW, Wine Companion

"From early promise, to calamities, to a dry tail saving the vintage, 2016 was peripatetic. Yet here, at this most reliable address, very good across the suite of whites. Planted in 1908 on sand. Crushed with 50% stems intact, as is the wont here. The HVD is the more phenolic of Tyrell's 3 single-vineyard semillons. De rigeur flavour intensity. Talc, bath salts and pumice. Lemon rind to grapefruit scents, too. A forceful finish marked by a generosity of extract and a gentle pucker. This will age very well."

93 Points | Aaron Brasher, The Real Review

"Really bright and youthful in the glass. Aromas of lemon butter, grapefruit pith, jasmine, toast and honeydew melon. Textured and creamy on the palate, lemon curd, nutty, citrus pith and toast. Bright and crunchy acidity provides real lift and freshness."

90+ Points | Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

"Very light and delicate, with an asprin flavour through it at present, so optimists might hope that may mitigate the effects of drinking a whole bottle at once? Maybe not. Anyway, more to lemon than lime, slightly herbal, firm tangy acidity, and a finish of decent length struck with a little bitterness. It’s very young and lean, and may surprise with bottle age."
