Continuing the high recognition by some of the country’s top judges, Australian family-owned Tyrrell’s Wines has had one of its most successful years on record at the Hunter Valley Wine Show. Tyrrell’s dominated the prize list, winning 17 of a total 59 available gold medals, and 10 of the 24 show trophies. 86% of all of their entries received a medal, along with Chardonnay of Show, Semillon of Show and the highly coveted Wine of Provenance Award for a third time.
In total, the 158 year old winery received 10 trophies, 17 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze medals, with the chardonnays collecting numerous gold medals and all of the trophies awarded for the variety this year. It also marks the sixth year Tyrrell’s have won Chardonnay of Show, with previous titles in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2014.
Tyrrell’s Chief Winemaker, Andrew Spinaze says “It’s rewarding to see that there has been a steady resurgence in the last 10 years of top-end chardonnay Australia wide. We try to stay at the forefront by trialling new techniques, and the results of this continue to deliver. This is especially reflected in our Vat 47 Chardonnay which maintains its status of one of the modern leaders of its variety.”
Tyrrell’s was also highly honoured to receive the Iain Riggs Wine of Provenance for a record third year for their Belford Semillon 2005, 2013 and 2016 vintages. This award is designed to recognise and celebrate wines of exceptional origin reflecting consistency of style and quality over time.
