2025 Vintage White Release

CHRIS TYRRELL’S 2025 VINTAGE REVIEW

It is with great excitement that we release the whites from the 2025 vintage. A vintage where we had both quality and quantity, which is rare in this industry. As Dad mentions later in this booklet, we had a good growing season with most of the luck going our way throughout, apart from Stevens. There were a few key milestones which made it the vintage it was. A wet autumn and winter provided ideal conditions throughout flowering, some heat over Christmas and then some rain at the end set us up perfectly.

“I couldn’t help but think the purity of this exceptional vintage has allowed the characteristics of each vineyard site to truly express themselves in the resulting wines.”

BRUCE TYRRELL’S 2025 VINTAGE REVIEW

Like 2024, this year was one of the earliest on record starting on the 6 January two days earlier than last year. Following an early spring and summer, the growing season was as long as usual, but it simply started earlier. We received good winter rains then it stayed dry from the end of winter.

There was little wind through the growing season, so the soil maintained its moisture level, which lead to a higher crop level than usual. We received some real heat in the latter part of December (two days over 40 degrees), which pushed the sugars up, but acids remained quite high and pH levels stayed down. The fruit was all in clean condition and stayed that way throughout vintage.

"2025 is one of those rare vintages where we get both quality and quantity.."

Yours sincerely,

STORY OF SINGLE VINEYARD

Our Single Vineyard wines champion our individual vineyard sites that produce wines of distinct character unique to that terroir. These vineyard sites include some of the world's most important viticultural assets that have an enviable track record of producing world-class wines; all are planted on their own roots using pre-phylloxera material, with the cornerstone of these being old-vine Semillon, Australia's most unique wine style. For most of our history, Tyrrell's has produced its wines by blending parcels from different vineyards. However, in 1983, we created the HVD Semillon, our first formally recognised single-vineyard wine. Throughout the 1980s, we continued to investigate how the location and soil of each individual vineyard influences the unique flavours of the wines they produce.

Then, in 1992, fourth generation Bruce Tyrrell struck a deal to buy grapes from the Stevens family, sealing it with a handshake. This key move enabled us to focus on the intrinsic quality and uniqueness of the great single vineyards of the Hunter Valley. Since then, we've set out to lease or purchase the very best vineyard sites in the Hunter Valley, with our 167 years of generational knowledge and understanding of our region playing a critical role in identifying and acquiring these distinctive vineyards. The redefinition of the vineyard source of our top wines has been the major change at Tyrrell’s over the past 40 years, and this Single Vineyard collection contains many of Australia's most sought-after wines that have a proven track record of producing wines of quality, pedigree and age-ability.

STORY OF WINEMAKER'S SELECTION

Murray Tyrrell created the Winemaker's Selection range back in 1965 when, with the assistance of Len Evans, he set out to determine the best wines from each vintage. He named these wines after the casks in which they were matured.

In 1974, having discovered that we had up to six casks from the same vineyard block that all tasted much the same, we brought the selection down to about 12 wines in total - a mixture of whites and reds. The early 2000s saw further consolidation with the inauguration of the Sacred Sites range and the expansion of our Single Vineyard program.

Today, the Winemaker's Selection wines are estate-grown on the various blocks that form the wines that we believe best represent our land and house style. These wines are only bottled in years when we believe that the quality is high enough to meet our exacting standards.

Wines include Vat 1 Semillon, Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon, Vat 47 Chardonnay, Vat 6 Pinot Noir, Vat 9 Shiraz, Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet.

Winemaker's Selection

2025 Vat 1 Semillon

Vat 1 Semillon is only ever made from the best old blocks of Semillon on our estate. The centerpiece of this wine is always our Short Flat Vineyard, where the oldest plantings date back to 1923. The soil profile in this dry grown vineyard is unlike that of any of our other vineyards, which gives Vat 1 its amazing length and depth of fruit.

Handpicked on 11, 13 and 17 January. The fruit was lightly pressed before the free-run juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent approximately six weeks on fine lees before being prepared for bottling in June 2025.

Pale in colour with hints of green. Citrus oil aromatics, pure. Complex, cascading layers of pure Vat 1 Semillon power. A truly great wine now and always will be. An exceptional example of Vat 1 that is set to be a classic.

2025 Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon label

Winemaker's Selection

2025 Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon

Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon is arguably the most unique wine Tyrrell's produces, made purely because the family and staff love the wine style so much. In 2025, the Chardonnay (75%) came from our Short Flat Vineyard and Semillon (25%) from our Vat 1 blend.

The Semillon was handpicked on 11 January and the Chardonnay on 22 January. Both varieties were vinified separately before being blended and bottled in June 2025. The Chardonnay component spent its time in mostly older French oak barriques, and the Semillon was made in a traditional unwooded style. Vat 63 Chardonnay Semillon is a blend steeped in history at Tyrrell’s and only ever made in great vintages.

Crystalline green. Grapefruit, white stone fruit and aspirin aromatics. Balanced, pure and effortlessly integrated. Juicy minerality on the palate. Chablis in style. The best Vat 63 in memory.

Winemaker's Selection

2025 Vat 47 Chardonnay

Vat 47 Chardonnay comes entirely from our Short Flat Vineyard, where the original Chardonnay vines were planted by Murray Tyrrell in 1968. The soil profile in this dry grown vineyard is unlike that of any of our other vineyards, which gives Vat 47 its unique character.

The fruit was handpicked from 15 - 25 January and immediately basket pressed. The free-run juice was transferred to French oak barriques to complete fermentation and nine months maturation before bottling in October.

Bright light straw-like with hints of green. Ginger biscuit spice with grapefruit and citrus blossom aromatics. Creamy, grapefruit, mineral oyster shell with pure lemon notes and gentle solids on the palate, mineral on the finish. Short Flat Vineyard chalky characteristic shining through. An exceptional Vat 47 Chardonnay.

STORY OF SACRED SITES

Our Sacred Sites wines are single-vineyard offerings from vineyards on our family estate that are over 100 years old, and produce wines of distinct character, unique to that terroir. These vineyard sites include some of the world's oldest and most important viticultural assets that are planted on their own roots using pre-phylloxera material. After the creation of our Single Vineyard collection of wines in the 1980s, fourth generation Bruce Tyrrell set out to further identify the truly historic old vine sites on our estate, and in 2004, the Sacred Sites collection of wines was introduced.

Today, our Sacred Sites collection is one of the most unique wine offerings in the world, with seven single block examples released when vintage quality allows, with the oldest vineyard in the set, Old Patch, planted in 1867. Having survived the test of time, these ancient vines consistently make exceptional wines that have their own distinct character and unique qualities. Production from each site is extremely limited, which, combined with their intrinsic quality, unique flavour profiles and ability to age position these wines as instant collectors' items, sought after the world over.
